Business start-up support

Starting a new business can be exhilarating, but also extremely exacting.

It's easy for crucial financial foundations to be overlooked in the rush to find customers and sell product. But if you want your business to take off and grow, the necessary infrastructure must be in place from the outset.

That's why we offer Saturday morning advice clinics at our Manchester office, to provide business start-ups with the right guidance from the get-go. It's the weekend, so your phone is quiet and you've got time and space to reflect and analyse your business needs in friendly expert company. The atmosphere is informal, the coffee is good and the advice is free. Our clinics are part of the Institute of Chartered Accountants' Business Advice Service, so we know what we are talking about.

It's a drop-in session but, for everyone's convenience, we do ask you to book a time slot in advance. That way, you avoid waiting in a queue. Yes, the clinics are that popular.

This service is unique in Manchester but, to us, it's not that unusual. We see it as just another part of our Pomegranate promise – to commit and care. We prefer to spend our Saturday mornings helping you build your business rather than out on the golf course.

There are a number of elements to the framework you require to make your business idea become a thriving enterprise:

Your business plan - Business planning is a key tool often overlooked by both new and existing businesses. You need to plan your growth to review cash flow and asset requirements. Even a successful business must set goals and targets, to provide focus both for owners and managers. Pomegranate will help you establish achievable goals and create the firm financial base to realise them.

Your company structure – is the second business fundamental that requires careful thought. As a new business, you can start as a sole trader, partnership or limited company. Which you choose should depend on factors such as the importance of public image, the degree of risk, the need to safeguard personal property and the most efficient structure for tax purposes. We can help you make the right choice by explaining the requirements of the Companies Act and directorial responsibility, and how to minimise the new company's tax liabilities.

Finance - is a key factor in start-up success. We can advise you on the best sources of finance to suit your circumstances and help you balance and maximise the resources available to you, including grants, bank loans, government funding and personal sources.

Taxation - is a major overhead for every successful business, and falls into three main categories:

  • Corporation tax or Schedule D tax on profits
  • PAYE and National Insurance, payable by employees and directors
  • VAT

We help you minimise your tax liabilities and plan around them. We can also take responsibility for some or all of your PAYE and VAT administration.

Keeping records - It can be a time-consuming chore, but efficient record keeping is the best way to monitor the success of your new business. We can help you create a manual or computerised accountancy administration system that is user-friendly, time-efficient and meets the needs of the Inland Revenue and other legislative agencies.

All the above have implications specific to each business. Why not contact us to arrange a time slot for our Saturday morning clinics, or a visit from one of our friendly expert staff to discuss how we can create a firm basis for your new venture?
