New Chief Executive Required

It has been announced that Sir Howard Bernstein will retire in the spring of 2017 after what will have been 19 years in the top job at Manchester City Council. A special meeting of the councils Personnel Committee will soon begin the recruitment process for the City’s next Chief Exec.

Sir Howard has overseen dramatic regrowth and regeneration within the city during his tenure at the top, and for a man who has dedicated his entire career to the city (starting at the council in 1971), he can retire very happy with the city’s achievements.

The opening of the Metrolink tram network in 1992, the aftermath of the IRA bombing in 1996 and the 2002 Commonwealth Games are just some of the events which have helped shape Manchester into the driving force behind the Northern Powerhouse- and Sir Howard has been at the forefront of it all.

Leader of Manchester City Council, Sir Richard Leese, when discussing Sir Howard’s replacement, said:

“Our new chief executive will need to be someone with the strategic vision, innovative ideas, partnership working skills and gravitas to help lead Manchester forwards into an exciting new phase.”

From the point of view of business in the city, we here at Pomegranate Consulting will be waiting with bated breath for the announcement. The new Chief Executive will have to take the city forward to the next level in a post-Brexit future, and with many thinking the Northern Powerhouse has lost a bit of steam recently, it will take a special somebody to fill the role. Sir Howard will certainly be leaving big boots to fill- let’s hope his successor can continue the good work.
